This piece is based on the Minuet from Bach's French Suite No 3. It was a piece I played when I was young and I have loved it ever since. It is also the “Theme C” choice for the original Tetris game on Gameboy. I loved this game. Unfortunately I destroyed my Gameboy in a fit of rage when the Tetris game froze while I was in the middle of creating a new high score. That tragedy has stuck with me and with this composition I hope to close the circle and make amends for that brutal act.
The title itself refers to the handwritten inscription that Bach made in the corner of the title page of the “Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach”. He wrote the titles of three books, one of which was “AntiMelancholicus”. The literal meaning of this is “to drive out the melancholy”. I really liked the mental imagery that this word conjured up and that is why I used it! Hopefully this piece makes you happy too.
This piece was commissioned by Jovanni-Rey V. de Pedro to perform at the 2015 Australasian Piano Pedagogy Conference.
The performer in the video at the top of the page is one of my students (and was only 12 yrs old when we recorded this!).
